Stubborn Internet Nutrition Myths
Dear Reader,
No matter how hard, how persistently experts try to get the right message out there, the internet continues to recycle and repost many of the same tired (false) nutrition myths. While the world wide web is great for staying in touch with friends and family across the globe; a convenient way to shop for curtains at 4:00 pm in your pajamas, and gives unparalleled access to the latest breaking news, as it happens, there is a downside to all this instant accessibility. The ease with which
mis-information can be spread.
Here are nine of the most stubborn myths, busted.
1. Cancer
cells do not feed on sugar. No matter what any email claims, this is not true. This type of email has been so widely circulated that both the National Cancer Institute and the American Cancer Society are getting questions about this. The fact is that the only connection added sugar has to cancer is in terms of weight gain, a recognized risk factor for many forms of cancer.
2. Vegetarian diets change body chemistry making your body more alkaline (a higher pH) and helping you drop weight. The thinking goes that much of what we eat (added sugar, processed foods, excess meats) makes our blood too acidic, so a diet loaded with alkalinizing foods should balance pH. Except that the body has several rather reliable internal mechanisms to control your pH levels. What you eat might show in the pH of your urine, but it cannot impact the pH of your blood
or body tissues.
3. You need to regularly cleanse your body. There are plenty of people out there who will tell you to cleanse your body two times a year to feel great. But there's little proof that fasting or following any kind of deprivation diet for a few days will do anything more than make you feel awful. No benefit whatsoever.
4. Microwaving destroys essential nutrients in food. You've heard this one a lot, no doubt, but it simply is not true. Research that compares microwaved food to traditionally cooked foods shows minimal differences. What's more, microwaving might help hold onto more of some nutrients that are water soluble and lost when foods are steamed.
5. Canola oil comes from the toxic rapeseed plant. Canola oil actually is from t he crushed seeds of canola plants, and while the two plants are cousins so to speak, they are very different nutritionally. Rapeseed is not allowed to be sold in the U.S., and what's more, canola oil is now regulated so it must have under 2% of erucic acid.
6. Sea salt is healthier than table salt. Marketers of this product want you to think you're getting a nutritionally superior product, but not true. Regular table salt and gourmet sea salt have essentially the same levels of sodium - 2,300 milligrams per teaspoon. Plus, most sea salt offers no more than 1-2% of the daily potassium and calcium you need.

Stubborn Internet Nutrition Myths Continued...
7. You burn more calories eating some foods than you take in. Ah, this one sounds
so good; unfortunately it's too good to be true. There are no such things as "negative calorie foods". The thinking comes from the idea that there are some foods that call for more energy to digest them than they offer the body. Foods like celery, lettuce, lemons and limes just do not do this for the body.
8. Margarine is a molecule away from being plastic. Margarine is made when liquid vegetable oils are hydrogenated turning the liquid into a solid when at room temperature. While it might be a less natural process than churning butter, it does not mean that the margarine in your refrigerator is anything near plastic. Most brands have cut the harmful trans fats, and have far less saturated fat than butter does.
9. Skim milk is more fattening than whole milk. While some population-based studies have found an association between full fat dairy and lower body weight, there's a whole lot more to the story. In terms of gaining weight, your total calories and the quality of those calories is what counts. Only when dairy is part of a calorie-restricted diet does it help with weight loss. Skim milk is a good choice, with no added sugars and lots of natural nutrients.
When it comes to medical advice, the internet is a fantastic tool, but by no means should it replace honest, open discussions with your own healthcare providers. Do some research certainly, but have a care where you get your information (sites with the .org or .net designation are generally more reliable) and beware of those using a grain of truth to sell a product or service.
To your good health,
